Project lead: User Research and design

The Problem
Shortlyster, a start-up recruitment company were experiencing large amounts of drop offs when candidates signed up to their platform. The challenge was to create a platform which was not tedious for candidates to complete, and did not compromise the integrity of the Shortlyster methodology.
The Goal
Understand the job searchers journey as a whole and their experience through the Shortlyster platform. By understanding their goals and frustrations we can identify key opportunity areas for Shortlyster and how to improve on its current experience.
Process
Understand the job search experience
12 interviews across the heavy industry (mining, construction, engineering, etc.) and technology (web development, advertising technology, web design, etc.) sectors. This involved scheduled structured interviews and unscheduled, 'intercept' interviews at Sydney airport.

The final deliverable of this being a visual representation of the job search process. As demonstrated by the journey map.
Understand current pain points
Getting users across various industries to use the Shortlyster platform and speak their mind about what they do and do not like, what they would use and how they would improve on the platform.
Co creation workshop
Using the research and usability testing findings as a tool for narrowing our focus. Two co-creation workshops were held with stakeholders to gain input and ideas into how they would build the platform.
Design and test phase 1
Testing low fidelity wireframes allowed for efficient testing with users to identify major problems
upfront.

The main themes identified from these tests were:
- A centralised profile gave a sense of ownership
- The purpose of Shortlyster was understood
- Too much content exhausted users
- Users forgot about the job ad they came from
Design and test phase 2
Designing using Sketch, and adding interactivity allowed for greater depth
of understanding pain points and perceptions.

The main themes from these tests were:
- Too many arduous questions
- Users want to quickly upload their information
- Set expectations of requirements early
- Demonstrate the benefit of Shortlyster
Final outcome
I designed a vision for Shortlyster that addressed key job searcher insights and reduced friction and cognitive load for users to signup.
These designs were successfully implemented and are currently used by candidates signing up to the Shortlyster platform.
